victorian remodel

After deciding to move back to Halifax, our clients wanted to find a house in a walkable, family-friendly neighbourhood, close to many urban amenities.  While the salt-box style house they found checked all of those boxes, the traditional layout of disconnected spaces and limited storage needed to be updated.  The clients wanted a modern kitchen and updated bathrooms, better storage, an additional bedroom, home office, guest room and a playspace for their three kids; energy efficiency was of critical importance.  The solution was to open up the rear of the house with a new beam in the ceiling, install triple glazed windows and move the kitchen to improve daylight and flow through the house.  Instead of an addition, an energy efficient basement remodel adds the office, guest and play spaces, while a careful reorganization of the upper floor provides space for a four piece bathroom, linen closet and another bedroom.  Special care was taken during construction to maintain existing crown moulding and trim details.  The result is a seamless coexistance of traditional and modern styles.
