Solterre Design

Nearing completion, the Tack Shop includes a renovation and addition to a 1940s grocery store. The 4000 square foot building was doubled in size by adding a second storey. Since occupying most of its corner site, there was little ability to include windows on the north and west sides of the building. To compensate for this, a split roof design with clerestory windows and wal k out dec k s provide a tremendous amount of daylight throughout the three professional offices on the second level.

The main floor, of concrete bloc k and bric k construction, has had multiple openings cut into the south façade, thus rejuvenating this corner building with multiple business entrances.

A minimal number of systems have been added to the building. We have super-insulated the structure to reduce any air-conditioning requirements. Passive ventilation has been planned for throughout the building. The original hardwood floors for the grocery store have been exposed, giving a great quality finish - not to mention history - for the new tenant. Salvaged doors from a recently demolished YWCA have been used for all of the interior doorways, with warm oa k veneer and brass hardware. Salvaged cast iron radiators have been incorporated within the hot water heating system.
