Solterre Design

A classic cape built in the late 1800s; the Oakland House had already seen several modifications over the decades. Working with its solid proportions and timeless structure, the recent renovation added a completely new lower level, a new living room wing and a mudroom. Together these provide additional family living space, a children's playroom, spare rooms, and a practical entrance, all on a new poured concrete foundation.

Enhancing the principal entrance on the north side is the mudroom, which houses the laundry area as well as ample closets and clothes storage. The new, south facing living room has three walls of windows and a woodstove; two new decks provide easy outdoor living and dining areas, with uninterrupted views of Mahone Bay . On the lower level are a children's play room, storage and additional spare rooms with walk-out access to the garden.

The net result is a handsome two and a half-story residence featuring a horizontal waterboard and cornerboards, sited comfortably into a south-facing slope, overlooking the waters of Mahone Bay.
