Solterre Design

Dramatically located on a slope overlooking the tidal flows of the Petpeswick Inlet, this modest two story home is designed to capture the impressive landscape of the eastern shore while sensitively respecting the site. All the main interior family spaces are brightly daylight rooms with direct views over the inlet. Each room flows into one another, creating distinct yet fluid family spaces. A three season glazed porch on the southern façade harnesses solar gain and connects the kitchen to a sheltered grass-free courtyard.

Designed to provide a barrier free home to be used into retirement, the master bedroom and ensuite bath are on the main floor. The two bedrooms on the second level take full advantage of the inlet views.

Solterre developed an energy strategy that focused on a tight envelope, high R-value in the roof and walls and an energy efficient heating system. The home is heated with an air-to-air heat pump that extracts heat from the air and then transfers it to either the inside or outside of the home depending on the season. Additionally, specific attention was paid to healthy materials and low emission finishes throughout the home.
