Stadacona Base, Halifax , NS
Sustainable Design relevance.
The Chief's and Petty Officer Mess at Stadacona base in Halifax , now known as " Juno Tower ", is Nova Scotia 's and DND's first LEED certified building. It required working with a restrictive sloping site, selective demolition, and existing facilities and infrastructure. The client requested conformance to LEED requirements for site disturbance, low-emission materials, healthful HVAC systems, and waste minimization. This project included a significant demolition component. The client requested a demolition audit and assessment of materials that could be re-used and recycled, with the intent of diverting as much as possible from landfill. In collaboration with the demolition contractor. 99% of demolition material was diverted from landfill for re-use and recycling.
The proposal call asked for a extensively developed design in a short time frame. This required effective and comprehensive integration of the entire design/build team. After construction began the client and the team decided to pursue LEED certification. The result is Nova Scotia 's and DND's first LEED certified building.
